Managers are the translation layer between your vision and your team’s daily decisions. If they can’t clearly articulate the company’s top priorities, neither can anyone reporting to them — and every layer of the organization ends up guessing at what actually matters.
## The Skill Worth Building
Effective communication is trainable skill, not a personality trait. And it’s exactly the kind of skill that separates a manager who executes tasks from a leader who moves an organization in the same direction.
Being authentic is the starting point — communicating in a way that’s genuinely you, not a scripted version of leadership. But authenticity alone isn’t enough. Effective communication also requires reading the room: does this priority need an email, a text, a face-to-face conversation, or a full team meeting to actually land?
## A Simple Test
Ask yourself: if you asked five random people in your company — not your leadership team, but five people two or three levels down — to name your top priorities for the year, would their answers match yours? If you flinched at that question, you’re not alone. But the fix isn’t complicated.
It starts with clearly articulating your priorities today, and then investing in your managers’ ability to carry that message forward clearly, consistently, and in their own words.
That’s not a one-time announcement. It’s a leadership competency — and like any competency, it has to be developed on purpose.
